Kumārila on language

Workshop with Lars Göhler

The aim of the workshop is the translation and analysis of the Ślokavārttika sections on the status of language and on meaning. The workshop will focus on the sections about language in Kumārila’s Ślokavārttika (especially śabdādhikaraṇa and vākyādhikaraṇa). These include interesting discussions of the main philosophical positions about word- and sentence-meaning.

Lars Göhler is lecturer of Indology at the Department of South Asian and Southeast Asian Studies in Cologne. He studied philosophy and Indology at the University of Leipzig and became interested in philosophical aspects of Vedic sacrificial ritual and the exegetical philosophy of Mīmāṁsā. His special field is philosophy of language and hermeneutics, as it was developed by the Mīmāṁsā. The ideas of the Mīmāṁsā-System in this field influenced Indian intellectual history in many respects. He published several works on this subject, among others Wort und Text bei Kumārila Bhaṭṭa (Frankfurt am Main 1995) und Ritual und Reflexion in der Pūrvamīmāṁsā (Wiesbaden 2011). Lars Göhler has given numerous lectures and seminars, especially in the field of Indian philosophy at the universities of Leipzig, Frankfurt am Main, Pune and Cologne.
